Eastern White Cedar....Western Red Cedar
Both the Eastern White and Western Red Cedar
trees/boards have very similar qualities regarding durability
and longevity. In Canada Cedar is highly regarded for outdoor
specialty items such as decks, furniture and for situations
where the wood will be constantly immersed in water. Untreated
in outdoor use Cedar is rated at a 25 year life expectancy.
When treated every few years with a oil based waterproofer
and UV protectant the life expectancy doubles to 50 years.
Without UV protection the wood will eventually change color
to a silvery driftwood gray color. Eastern White Cedar is
uniformly pale in color while Western Red Cedar is in the
darker mid range with the spectrum of shades spanning very
pale, almost a creamy white hue right through to a dark chocolate
tone. Some boards even have subtle pink and red streaks that
are very beautiful.
Eastern White Cedar trees are much smaller than their
Western Red Cedar cousin and not surprisingly most White Cedar
lumber/boards are not "clear", they are typically
knotty. Western Red Cedar is less costly when ordered in the
knotty version and of course the premium material is the clear
grade with no knots at all. Longevity is very similar and
at some point a customer's budget and personal taste will
dictate which type of wood is used. I often have customers
who want to match a particular shade on an adjacent building
or other structure so at times like these having two species
of Cedar to choose from is a good thing. The clear material
is very attractive and is my first choice but I appreciate
that different people have different budgets.......Steve
